Tamil Senior Citizens’ Association (NSW) Inc. Australia

We are the premier group for Tamil Seniors in NSW, Australia and have been functioning since July 1990.

The Tamil Senior Citizens’ Association is one of many Associations in Australia that cater for to the welfare of its Senior Citizens, with particular emphasis on the welfare of the Tamil ethnic community. The Association was registered in 1991 and strides along now in its twentyfifth year. Its main objective is to improve the quality of life of its members, to promote the language and culture of the Tamils, and to undertake activities of a benevolent nature.

Membership is open to Permanent Residents/ Citizens of New South Wales, males and females over 50 years.of age.

Commencing with a membership of 27, the Association has blossomed to over 800. A Committee of Management of 14 manages the Association. As in the case of other Australian Associations this one too “Fashions an Association based on a commitment to family, enterprise, mateship and fair go for all members” (In a message, sent to the Association when it celebrated its tenth anniversary, by the Hon. John Howard, Prime Minister )

The members meet every Thursday at the Strathfield Community Centre, 1B Bates Street, Homebush and reminiscence on their past, discuss current and future events. Some members hone their skills in indoor games like, bridge, chess, scrabble, carom, table tennis etc. The ladies follow classes in knitting, patchwork, handicrafts etc.

On the fourth Thursday, Members’ Day, of every month talks are delivered by professionals and the like including our own, on subjects relating to medical, social, migration, literary etc. The day ends with a fellowship lunch.

Seniors’ Week is celebrated along with the NSW Seniors Week. Indoor games competions among our members culminate during seniors week. Members of Parliament, Mayors of local councils and other distinguished guests honour with their presence. A ten – ten softball cricket match with a few lady members participating adds colour to our seniors’ week celebrations.

Christmas, Thai Pongal, Deepavali, Grandchildren’s’ Day are some of our annual events.

TAMIL SENIOR CITIZENS’ BENEVOLENT SOCIETY (NSW) Inc.

An affiliate of the Association is the Tamil Senior Citizens’ Benevolent Society (NSW) Inc. which was registered in 1993. It has a membership of over 600. An Elected Board of Trustees manages the affairs of the Benevolent Society. Membership is open to members of the Tamil Senior Citizens’ Association, subject to certain qualifications. The objective of the Society is to enable members to be of mutual assistance in making financial provision towards their funeral expenses.

Since its inception over 200 members have gone to their eternal rest and benefited with the payment towards their funeral expenses. Currently the Society pays $5000 towards the funeral expense of its members. This is of great assistance to our members, almost all of whom are dependent on Age Pension or other payment from Centrelink.                                                                                                                                                    ______________________________________________________________________________________________
